Golems live in a Golem hole....
They are not as cute as Hobbits, nor
as nasty as Orcs. In fact, all they do
is walk, climb, and fall.
And fall. And fall. As long as
they land on something solid, the
Golems go on living, walking,
climbing. But [when] they fall off the
screen, they die.
Don't worry. Golems are plentiful
in this odd matrix. Named after
magical dirt creatures of Jewish folk
lore, Golems only want to be free!
And you have controls to help them
find the Exit and live to walk, climb,
and fall another day. To command a
Golem, first click on the Command
Button at the bottom of the screen (if
it is not already selected). Then
point to a Golem and click again. If
the Golem has its feet on a solid
surface, it will change what it is
doing.
Clicking at just the right time on
the Golem is one of the challenges of
the game. The best instant to click is
when the Golem has its feet spread, or
it is hunched over a block, about to
climb it. This is a reflex action you
just have to learn.
THE COMMANDS
SQUAT - Probably the most useful
command, SQUAT causes the Golem to
become a single chunk of stone,
perfect for climbing. Click on the
Golem just as it is stepping off
into the abyss, and the chunks
extend out over the chasm. The
brave Golem sacrifices its life
for the good of all, but another
Golem will be born to take its
place.
BLOCK - This command causes the Golem
to stop and block the way of other
Golems. BLOCK is not fatal. A
BLOCKing Golem can be commanded to
do any other task, if possible.
Caution: Golems are known to climb
on top of each other's heads and
even walk atop each other. A
BLOCKing Golem can be over-run.
JACK - Short for [jackhammer], a
JACKing Golem will dig a hole in
the surface until it is commanded
to WALK or it runs out of surface.
The Golem must complete one layer
of JACKing before obeying the
command. When it breaks through
the surface, it falls.
Note: Some surfaces are impervious
to JACKing. The Golem will simply
ignore the command if it is
impossible. If the JACKERer
punches through a layer and hits
an indestructable block, it stops
JACKing around!
DRILL - Like JACK, except horizonal.
As long as the Golem has material
that is DRILLable, it will
continue to step forward and start
anew, even (strangely enough)
standing on empty space. Like
JACK, a new command is obeyed only
after the current layer has been
DRILLed.
Note: Getting a Golem to DRILL is
probably the most time-sensative
click in the game. When a WALKing
Golem has its nose pressed against
a wall, it is probably too late to
start DRILLing. Thanks to beta
checker Robin Harbron, we gave a
Climbing Golem a moment's
hesitation when encountering a
turn situation. The makes starting
a DRILL much easier.
WALK - This command is most useful
for stopping JACKing and DRILLing,
and putting BLOCKing Golems back
in motion.
QUIT - This ends the level, stranding
any Golems that have not gone
through the Exit. You can QUIT a
level at any time, and it may be
necessary when remaining Golems
are stuck in inescapable places.
[WARP SPEED] - Once you have built a
good path to the EXIT, you have to
wait for all the Golems to get
there. To speed up this process,
<RIGHT-CLICK> the mouse, or press
<F7>. Just look at them fly! Right
Click again -- or <F7> -- and they
return to normal speed.
THE GAME
We have included seven challenges
for you and your Golems. The goal is
to rescue as many as possible. Golems
that make it to the Exit in one level
are added to the number for the next
level.
When you QUIT a level, you have
the opportunity to [Continue] to the
next level, [Do Over] the level you
just completed, or to [Quit] the game.
[Do Over] restarts the level with the
same total Golems as before, giving
you a chance to improve your
performance.
Giving the right command at the
right place at the right time is the
key to success. Practice makes perfect
-- at least as perfect as a Golem can
get!
BEYOND THE GAME
We have included the Golem Editor
so [YOU] can create new worlds and
challenges. See the docs for the
Editor for details about building a
Golem world.
GOLEMS, the game program, is
designed to read all levels currently
on the disk when the game begins, and
present them in the same order as on
the directory. Therefore, to check out
a level, put it on a work disk with
the game programs (B.GOLEM and
GOLEM.PKD), and try it out.
We are waiting for your new, great
Golem challenges here at the Tower.
Help us create the ULTIMATE GOLEM
WORLD!
